History in Practice is my YouTube channel where I talk about how history works, about teaching and writing history, and chat with other historians about their practice.

about me.
I'm a historian of Russia and Professor of History at Queens College, City University of New York. I talk about history on a YouTube channel called History in Practice. I'm the author of The Essential Guide to Writing History Essays (Oxford University Press, 2020) and An Ordinary Marriage: The World of a Gentry Family in Provincial Russia (Oxford University Press, 2013), as well as various articles and op-eds. I earned my BA at the University of Chicago and my PhD at Columbia University. I have lived and complained about the weather in Norway as well as in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Ivanovo in Russia. I now live and complain about the weather with my husband and two children in Connecticut, where we are all owned by one weird cat.
